The word itself is dangerous. Cyberbullying or Cyber Harassment is a form of bullying or harassment using electronic means or gadgets. Cyberbullying and Cyberharassment are also known as online bullying. Rapidly, the cases are increasing in this. Day by day it has become increasingly common among teenagers as the digital platform has expanded and technology has advanced. It involves the use of information and communication technologies that support deliberate, hostile and often repeated behaviour by individuals or groups that is intended to hurt others. Mostly these are done with the help of fake profiles in social media. It can occur through SMS, text messages, social apps and social media platforms or forums or gaming where people can view, participate in or share content. The recent decision was taken in light of the high number of cyberbullying cases in India.

Cyberbullying causes psychological, emotional and physical stress Each person’s response to being bullied is unique. It may lead you to depression or anxiety. It may increase feelings of sadness and loneliness, and may affect your eating and sleeping pattern as well. Once you are bullied, you feel humiliated and you start to lose interest in activities. Youth who are bullied are more likely to struggle personally or at school. Children who are over sensitive may drop out or skip school. If they are continuing with school then they might get poor grades in studies. Also there are people who get addicted to drugs and alcohol , which is dangerous to their health as well. Bullying can lead to thoughts about suicide, sometimes persisting into adulthood .

Talk to a trusted person to figure with the best ways to deal with the problems. Help can come from a family member, friends, or any adult like a teacher or mentor . Sometimes talking to a counsellor or health professional at school or elsewhere can help you get through the emotional effects of bullying. Speak up against bullying , it’s as simple as saying stop. Keep evidence of cyberbullying. Try to record date, time and descriptions. Screenshot is the way to record the chats. Block the person with whom you are feeling insecure. You are not alone . It is not your fault , nobody should be bullied. Do not hurt yourself. Do not let the bully win, do what you love to do. 

Always think carefully before posting or texting something online. Set privacy settings on your accounts.  Beware of fake profiles. Few steps to stay away from cyberbullying -

  1. Don’t respond to any unknown contacts easily. Check before replying back.

  2. Don’t be an accomplice by forwarding any of the messages to other children.

  3. Try to collect screenshots and print outs of messages as proof and evidence of cyberbullying. 

  4. If you are being bullied , tell any of the adults immediately to get help in solving the problem.

  5. Incorporate internet safety awareness classes into the curriculum.

These are the tips you may follow to stay safe and fine, both physically as well as mentally.
